“It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.”
–Nelson Mandela.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY LEADERSHIP ?
According to Dr. Myles Munroe, the CEO of Third International World Leaders Association and author of the book ‘ The Spirit of Leadership ’, “Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose.” (Daskal, 2016). The leadership in an business organization can be a process of motivating and directing the employees and colleagues with a definite strategy to meet the goals of the organization (Ward, 2020). Leadership does not have to do anything with any level of position in an hierarchy or seniority of an organization rather is aspired by the traits and attributes of a Leader and the degree of inspiration achieved by its followers (Kruse, 2013).
TRADITIONAL APPROACH OF LEADERSHIP
Kurt Lewin, called as the ‘ Father of Social Psychology ’ in the era of 1930’s gave a ground-breaking work by identifying three behavioural types of leadership styles classified as the traditional approaches if leadership (Carlin, 2019) :
| AUTOCRATIC LEADERSHIP | Lewin explains the autocratic style of leadership as a management style wherein higher authority has the power to control all the decisions and accepts very little input from its sub-ordinates. The decisions are highly based on the leader’s beliefs and eliminated from its followers suggestions/advices. Autocratic leadership is only an effective form in such organizations where quick decisive making process is enabled for any nature of work performed within whereas the leader is the sole responsible authority of the outcome of the decision implemented. Possibilities of damaging the structure as well as profit making body of organization in a long run as it resembles that with a dictator type of leadership. Source : (TheEconomicTimes, 2020). |
| DEMOCRATIC LEADERSHIP | The following type is also identified as the participative leadership where the subordinates are equally involved for the process of decision making. Considered as greater effective method than autocratic leadership due to enough participation of all the authorities reporting benefital in achieving the business goals within time frame. The framework enables employees come together, enhance the communication & sharing of ideas, reaching a consensus for the best approach ahead. Source : (Luenendonk, 2016). |
| LAISSEZ-FAIRE LEADERSHIP | The term Laissez-Faire is a French term meaning ‘ leave alone‘. As the term say, the highlighting feature remains the fact of the leader staying out of an individual goal and allowing the subordinates to lead a specific goal. Influencing for decision making by the leaders is absent whereas the essence still remains to ensure the group to be self in charge for outlining the strategical objectives and persuading the conditions for recognizing the goals. Considered as the current emerging form of leadership styles among many organizations. Source : (Belyh, 2017). |
CONTEMPORARY APPROACH OF LEADERSHIP :
With the evolution of history and business, mankind has provided evolving great new leaders with their emerging leadership styles over crude centuries of time.
Mid 1800’s to 1940’s was recognized as the ‘ Trait ’ era when Scottish philosopher “ Thomas Carlyle ” gave the ‘ Great Man ’ theory also called Trait theory which included traits such as motivation, ambition, self-confidence, integrity, flexibility, intelligence, etc. asserting that leaders are born and not made. The ‘Behavioural Theories’ emerged in 1940’s existing for two decades. The theory promoted the fact that leadership can also be learnt following trends of weather leaders were concerned with the subordinates well-being or the work done. The ‘Contingency Theory’ followed the next two decades Upto 1980’s where ‘Hersey & Blanchard’ developed the Situational Leadership Model used as a base to select the type of leadership for implementation. Later, emerged the New Leadership Era. (Mac, 2015).

TRANSACTIONAL LEADERSHIP

The market during 1980’s got tightened arising a new form of leadership theory.
Transactional leadership also named managerial leadership primarily focusses on initial supervision, organization and lastly assessing the perfomancial background of the groups. The leader in a systematic and structural manner here expects its group to be compliant and rewards and appraises the one with best performance.
Key identified traits of the leader can be :
- Extrinsic motivation
- Practicality
- Resistant to change
- Discourage independent thinking
- Rewards performance
- Constrained thinking
- Passive & directive
- Emphasis on corporate culture and self-interest.

TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP

The approach for the transformational leadership style was first held up in 1978 by ‘James Burns’ introducing the concept as a process where leaders with their charisma & followers are mutually responsible for each other’s improvement. Following in 1985, ‘Bernard Bass’ argued with the same theory in a different perspective (Mac, 2015).
Basically, Transformational Leadership Style exists where leaders continuously encourage, inspire and motivate its followers for innovation and change helping them to cultivate a better organization tomorrow. This emerging platform provides employees a free room to be more creative, look for the future and find answers to the problems and performed through mentorship and training (White, 2018).
By the past 10 years, researchers are very keen observing transformational leadership style as the most effective leadership strategy of implementation within both public as well as the private sector industries (Hassan & Hatmaker, 2014).
Bernard Bass gave some hallmarks of a transformational leader which sets them apart from the other styles of leadership.
- A transformational leader always encourages and motivates his team for the positive development and mindset of its employees performing any goals.
- The leader exemplifies the moral standards in the company and always fosters an ethical behaviour approach and work environment with clear set of values, priorities and standards.
- The leader possesses a positive attitude towards the work with the self-interest mindset working for a common good.
- The leader withstands on authenticity, cooperation and implements an open communication grounds.
- Coaching and mentoring are always provided to the employees on regular basis with new suggestions and ideas always welcomed Inspite of the ownership for the tasks.
Source : (White, 2018).
Therefore, the leader accomplishes his style of transformational leadership in any business organization by enabling a strong sense of corporate culture , ownership over employees and allowing independence to the employees in their workplace in the decision making process (White, 2018).
CHALLENGES FACED BY LEADERS OF 21st CENTURY
21st century world is considered to be a world of disruptive digital business models, highly augmented workforces and flat organization structures where the leaders experiences challenges from its company to buckle up and direct the path ahead. It is also analysed that many organizations still promotes traditional approach over the contemporary with the identical leadership capabilities as decades ago. This is believed to become an intersection of the traditional approach with new styles creating a crossroad for the company focussing on both ways (Volini, 2019).

Above, represents the statistics by the 21st century leaders who believes evolutionary approach of leadership styles as a bloom over the traditional approach and identifies the practices and competencies developing the leadership styles and adding value to them (Schwartz, 2019).
Therefore, developed leaders with new competencies in their leadership approach brings new challenges evolved out. The leadership styles are equally paramount for an organization as equal as its culture, structure and managerial processes and hence gaps are mandatory to be identified and filled:
- Transparency being the most valuable currency for a company, enables competitive disadvantage if lacking. It engenders trust & respect among employees–owners.
- Internal collaboration eliminates loss making decisions and enables focussing on narrow towers of the responsibility and work together.
- Performance management measures the success of the individual leader to shape the behaviour in the 21st century world.

Really nice blog Mr. Aman You have used an interesting example of Jeff Bezos with the theory of leadership. Can you highlight the theory of situational leadership with the implementation to leadership style of Bezos?

Thankyou Rutvi for the appreciation.
Jeff Bezos is known for his extraordinary style of Autocratic leadership. Having the approach of autocratic style in the 21st century world is a challenge in itself which Jeff Bezos’ proved it as a strength behind the success of Amazon empire.
As you questioned the situational leadership theory, Hersey-Blanchard situational leadership is composed of relationship behaviour and task behaviour. Under relationship behaviour, a leader engages employees in a two-way communication. This is the case in Amazon.com where Jeff Bezos engages his subordinates although he gives all the directions. Based on the four quadrant model, a leader can direct, coach, support, and delegate leadership. Drawing from the leadership of Bezos, the leader gives directions; delegates’ power to subordinates, supports employees, and employs coaching skills to others.
For example, Bezos inspires colleagues and supports them to deliver their best. In participating, the leader share ideas, encourage participation, and facilitates the process of decision making. Weekly meetings are carried in Amazon.com where new ideas are encouraged through brainstorming and presentations. Although delegating is allowed, Bezos goes contrary to the expectation of this style. In other words, Bezos does not allow his followers to make most decisions and their implementations. Based on this form of contingency theory, it can be concluded that Jeff Bezos is more of task-oriented than relationship-oriented leader.
Thankyou.

Very enlightening blog Mr. Aman. Do you think Bezos’ leadership style impacts the culture of Amazon?

Thankyou Bhavya for your appreciation. Interestingly, i would say yes for your question, bezos’ style of leadership do impact the culture.
Amazon is one of the few companies with a culture of discourse where employees are encouraged to be pugnacious over each other’s views seeing it as a way to generate honest views from its employees during the decision making the process. Besides, it can be seen as a proof that Jeff Bezos is a transformational leader for boosting intellectual and imaginational stimulation of his employees by encouraging different opinions on the table and driving employees to see situations from different eyes through arguing their views, resulting in the innovative and productive workforce within the company.
I consider therefore that Bezos’ style is the ultimate factor behind the success of Amazon empire.

Really enjoyed reading your blog. On one of your examples, you spoke about Nelson Mandela. He spoke about bravery and this is what people will remember for while being on the front line. Do you believe bravery is still a key aspect for contemporary leadership now a days?

Hey Ahmed, thankyou for showing your keen interest towards the blog. Nelson Mandela has always been an inspiration for innumerous leaders.
Taking his words further, bravery is the key sign to overcome your threats. You would agree with me with the reality that starting a business is hard, but running and growing one is becoming increasingly more Herculean in the face of global, economic, political and environmental changes which are impacting business more than ever. The willingness and fortitude to take risks, face fear, and deal with difficulty are not only expected of leaders, it is a prerequisite. Fierce confidence and conviction are required in order to buffet the inevitable setbacks and disappointments that come with leading a company.
But, bravery alone isn’t nearly enough. An equally important characteristic for today’s successful leaders is humility and embracing a growth mindset. Humility limits bravado and gives leaders the space (and permission) to learn, listen, experiment and not feel they must have all the answers.
Threfore, i strongly agree with the words of great leader in today’s world. I hope you find it useful.

Hi,Aman,
I like your articles, which are concise in structure, clear in thought, and in a contemporary leadership style: how do they relate in today’s changing world? As a topic, it is a good article to analyze several leadership styles and the challenges it faces, and to analyze Jeff bezos’ leadership style as an example.I have another question.
If you were a leader, what would your style be?

Hi Emma, Thankyou for your love and interest towards the blog.
Today’s evolving, developing and changing world is full of challenges and opportunities. Leadership styles have always been evolving past many centuries with the changing world and for 21st century a leader should be one who can inspire, motivate, show path of success, provide room for improvement to its followers and is a good power of decisions.
Therefore, all this qualities follow the traits of transformal leader and so i believe transformal leadership as most effective leadership style in 21st century.
If i was a leader, i would try to adapt every style of leadership. Sounds funny but logical. Today’s world have every new challenge as you grow and every challenge requires different types of leads and so adapting a similar style of leadership wont be enough helpful to tackle every challenge. “Adaption is only the new evolution.”
Thankyou!

Which is the leadership style that you like the most and why? Also which is the most effective leadership style in today’s world

Hello Roohi, Thankyou very much for your appreciation and impressive question.
If you ask me for my favourite style of leadership, i would say All. Performing in today’s changing world is like getting challenges from everywhere at the same time. As every challenges are different in their own way, the leaders must ensure that they adapt every leadership style accordingly. Also, everyone are dealt differently. Employees cant be treated like suppliers or the intermediary firms. Therefore, i believe adapting same leadership style over several decades without evolution is not acceptable.
But also if you ask for the most effective style in today’s world, I would say transformational leadership. It is because transformational leaders inspire their staff through effective communication and collaboration and thus initiating the path to success. They set challenging goals and higher expectation from each employee eventually achieving a greater result.
These individuals are often blue-sky thinkers. For the successful implementation of their strategic visions, the organization might need more detail-oriented managers.
I hope it was useful.

Hi Sarvo, thankyou so much for your appreciation. Nelson Mandela has always been my inspiration to become a great leader. He is a leader of dedication, inspiration, and his vision of change.
He encouraged the actions of others, and motivated others towards acceptance of people that are different. he modeled the way, inspired a shared vision, enabled others to act, challenged the process, and encouraged the heart, which are all 5 parts of leadership. All these qualities, and his peaceful tactics for dealing with the issue, are some of the many reasons why Nelson Mandela was such a great leader.
Thankyou!
